As an alumni graduating from Media Arts BA (Hon), the University of Plymouth holds a special place in my academic journey, and I am eager to return to further studies. From my past experience on campus and my understanding of the structure of the course, I am confident that the MA Photography programme will provide the perfect platform to advance my practice, expand my knowledge, and achieve my future aspirations.
During my undergraduate studies I built a good relationship with lecturers and technicians who help challenge my approach to my practice, strengthening my artistic voice. Their mentorship was instrumental, and I am excited by the prospect of once again being part of that vibrant academic community.
During my time at the UoP I experimented darkroom practices, letterpress, screen print and zine making, as well as creating ephemeral work, such a freezing a photograph in a block of ice to commemorate Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s birthday. I love and adore, making and viewing traditional forms of photography, but wish to explore new ways of working within my practice, as well as pushing conventions for the viewing audience.
Since graduating, I have continued to build on my personal portfolio of images and worked with a range of clients to meet specific briefs. I am eager to further refine my craft and deepen my theoretical understanding. The MA Photography programme presents a unique opportunity to explore activism through the ‘Activist Photography’ core module. This resonates deeply with me, as I am passionate about using photography as a medium for social change, and recognise its power as a tool for highlighting critical issues and driving awareness.
In addition to my practice, I aspire to teach in the near future, either at an academic or community level. Since completely my undergraduate degree, I have returned to the UoP as a mentor to a third-year student, which has reinforced my commitment to education and the sharing of knowledge.
Thank you for considering my application and I look forward to hopefully returning to UoP for the next part of my artistic and professional journey.

My best,
Scott
